FERRER BOBET - Vinyes y Velles 2017

"The 2017 Vinyes Velles was made from 74% Cariñena and 26% Garnacha from hillside vineyards over 70 years old on Llicorella slate soils within the boundaries of the village of Porrera. All the wines are made in a similar way - fermentation after a short cold soak, with pumping over and racking and macerating until the taste says enough is enough. This wine matured for 16 months in 225 litre French barriques. In a warmer year, the high Cariñena content worked wonders; it has herbal and floral aromas and a rustic side, but is predominantly elegant. It has a wonderful texture and very fine tannins; you don't feel any heat at all and it has an amazing balance and a very tasty finish. The oak is perfectly integrated. These wines have a very low pH, as the slate soils do not contain potassium, and the wines retain a good freshness. 23,290 bottles and 501 magnums were produced. It was bottled in June 2019."
